Week of January 9 - 15 2023

Greetings fright fans!

With Friday the 13th arriving this week there are numerous horror movie offerings across the city. For the die hard Friday the 13th fans there are two competing options on Friday night - Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter at the Fox Theatre at 7:15 pm, and Freddy vs. Jason presented by Drunken Cinema at the Revue at 9:30. It is theoretically possible to go to both. If you are trying to choose and you have not purchased tickets yet the choice has already been made for you - Freddy vs. Jason is SOLD OUT! The good news is that Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter is the far better film. Arguably the best slasher film from the 1980s featuring an incredible performance by the late Ted White as Jason, an early role for 80s star Corey Feldman and amazing make-up effects by the one and only Tom Savini. If you have tickets for Freddy vs. Jason you won’t be disappointed as the Revue is brining out all the stops for this 20th anniversary screening with live music and lots of fun!

For those looking for something new, both the Fox Theatre and the Revue Cinema are showing the indie Canadian horror film “Skinamarink”. Shot on a shoestring budget this film has a significant amount of buzz as it makes its Toronto Premiere. The filmmaker Kyle Edward Bell is a future superstar for the genre so don’t miss out on your opportunity to see this film. There are multiple screenings at both theatres so please go out and support indie Canadian horror!

And if that isn’t enough for Friday the 13th the highly underrated Kingsway Theatre is projecting The House of Exorcism in 35mm.

On Saturday the Revue is presenting Eight Legged Freaks. The David Arquette film featuring giant spiders is lots of fun and worth seeing on the big screen if you missed the chance on its initial release.

Finally on Sunday January 15th 2023 the Paradise Theatre is screening one of the greatest horror films of all time “Night of the Living Dead”. This is a movie that is meant to be seen on the big screen and was written and directed by genre great George Romero, who called Toronto home in his later years.
