Week of January 16 - 22 2023
Greetings fright fans!
Friday the 13th may have passed but there are still a number of horror entertainment options in the city this week.
First of all - the Canadian indie horror film “Skinamarink” continues at both the Revue and the Fox Theatre. This divisive film made almost $800K at the North American box office this weekend (on a $15K budget) and finished #11 at the weekend box office. An incredible achievement for an indie film. Be warned, however, if you are expecting a narrative film with characters and a story you will be disappointed. This is an experimental film and definitely not for everyone. Various critics have compared it to “The Blair Witch Project” but really the only similarity is that both movies were made on a small budget. Judge for yourself by checking it out at the Revue on January 17th @ 9:30 or 18th at 5:30; or at the Fox Theatre on January 19th at 9:30 pm.
The Revue is showing “Don’t Look Now” on January 19th at 9:30 pm. An excellent example of early 70s horror, the film follows the terrifying events that unfold for a couple after the devastating loss of their child. The movie stars Canadian icon, and one=time Toronto resident Donald Sutherland.
The Kingsway Theatre is a wonderful place to see a horror movie and their programmers are committed to create great horror movie experiences in their theatre. This Friday night the Kingsway is once again screening “The House of Exorcism” in 35 mm.
And if you are looking for old-school horror the Fox Theatre is screening Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” on January 22nd at 4:15 pm.
